The task of choosing between flooring options is a formidable one indeed. A person can easily
become overwhelmed and feel in over their heads. Strip floors? Engineered floors? What does
any of this mean? Not to mention that when choosing between flooring options, there are so
many factors that can influence such a decision, including your personal style, the room you
need floored, budget and other preferences. To help you make this decision, our flooring
experts have compiled a list of the five trendiest types of flooring in South Africa.

Solid wood floors
Solid wood flooring is a type of flooring that is made completely from wood all the way through
its thickness. Most commonly, it is made from hardwood including beech, teak, oak, walnut,
cherry or maple. Many old houses in South Africa have hardwood floors. This style has,
however, remained a classic that is consistently on trend since it matches with any style and
can bring a warm feel to a living space. On top of this it is durable and can be restored multiple
times over its lifespan.

Engineered flooring
Laminate flooring, specifically engineered wood flooring, is made up of a thin layer of real
hardwood which is bonded with several layers of high quality plywood. This type of laminate
flooring has quickly become a fan favourite in homes across South Africa, being popular for
many areas including bedrooms, passage ways, lounges and dining rooms. Engineered wood
flooring creates the same look and feel of hardwood floors whilst being less costly and easier to
install. They can, however, only be restored once during their life span because the layer of
hardwood is somewhat thin in comparison.

Tiles
Tiles are thin square-shaped plates that are usually made from natural stone, terracotta, slate or
marble. There are also more affordable options such as porcelain. Tiles are used in many
contexts across the living space including both areas with and without moisture and even on the
walls, tabletops and roofs. Tiles can be incredibly beautiful, are water resistant, durable and
easy to maintain. They can, however, be cold and slippery (as well as hard) when wet.

Vinyl flooring
Vinyl flooring is flooring that is made completely out of plastic. Whilst older vinyl floors were not
very pleasing to the eye, modern vinyl floors have a very appealing aesthetic. Because it is
waterproof, vinyl flooring is especially popular for rooms with high levels of moisture, including
kitchens, bathrooms and even basements. Adding to its popularity is that it is easy to install,
easy to clean, durable, cost-effective and provides a softer feeling underfoot than tiles.

Concrete
Concrete flooring is formed from the surface of a slab of concrete that is either poured on
location or in a factory. It has long been a flooring favourite because of its modern aesthetic that
can easily be combined with contemporary decor, both inside and outside. Additionally, it is cost
effective, requires little maintenance and very durable. This durability, however, does also
double-up as a con since it can be very hard and does not retain heat very well.
